The Gel server Python package, all Rust extensions (rust_native, pgrust, gel-http, conn_pool), all C extensions (pgproto, pgcon, turbo_uuid, dbview, protocol modules, graphql extension, pgsql parser), and the EdgeQL parser grammar compiled successfully; 824 non-database unit tests pass. The server cannot start because the embedded PostgreSQL 16 database backend could not be built from source in this container without root packages and with missing autoconf/flex/bison propagation to the build system.

The full database server cannot start because PostgreSQL 16 from the submodule cannot be built in this environment (missing system-level dependencies and no root). However, the Python package, Rust extensions, C extensions, and parser grammar all built successfully. 824 unit tests passed covering EdgeQL syntax parsing (719 tests), common library modules (95 tests), API errors, doc checks, and quote utilities — all without needing a database backend. The gel-server binary loads and shows its help text. The `__EDGEDB_DEVMODE=1` environment variable enables version display.
