The keyboards in the catalogue Argusic tracks, in one table you can filter by what you will do with it: writing code all day, office work, gaming, a Mac, or a bag. Filter by layout, switch, connection and price, then read the buying guide below the table for what each choice changes.

Nothing here was tested hands-on. Specs are what the seller states, and the Use for rules are Argusic's, printed beside the filter.

Right now: 821 keyboards, each with a price read in the store's window, 802 in stock. Latest price read 10/19/2026 11:08 PDT.

Use for
The rules
  • Programming: A layout with dedicated arrow keys (65% and larger) and a stated switch type that is mechanical, magnetic (Hall effect), optical or Topre. 60% boards, membrane and scissor boards, and keyboard and mouse sets are left out. Layout and switch type have to be stated.
  • Office: A full-size or 96% to 98% layout, with a number pad, and switches not stated as clicky (quiet on calls). The layout has to be stated.
  • Gaming: Magnetic (Hall effect) or optical switches, or a stated polling rate of 1,000 Hz or more.
  • Mac: The listing states macOS support or a Mac layout. A listing that says nothing about Mac is not judged.
  • Travel: Wireless (Bluetooth or a 2.4 GHz receiver), and a 75% layout or smaller. Connection and layout have to be stated.
  • A keyboard whose listing does not state what a rule needs is not counted as meeting it. Ticking two uses shows keyboards that meet both.
20 shown of 821 matching

Recommended: $50 to $120 first, popular first, one brand at a time; rows priced at another store take every third place while any are left. This is Argusic's editorial default, not a quality ranking. Commissions never change the order.

Best keyboards for programming

Code leans on keys that prose rarely touches: brackets and braces, Esc, the function row for debugger shortcuts, the arrows and Home and End for moving through a file. The layout decides which of those keep their own key and which move behind a layer key, so pick the layout first, then the switch.

253 keyboards of the 821 in this table meet the Programming rule printed beside the filter, from $16.49 to $751.54 at the last price check. 190 keyboards do not state enough to judge and are never counted as meeting it.

Layout: which keys you keep

A full-size board has a number pad. A TKL (tenkeyless, about 80%) drops the number pad and keeps the function row, the arrows and the navigation cluster. A 75% board keeps the function row and arrows packed closer together; a 65% board drops the function row; a 60% board also drops the arrows, which then sit behind a layer key. If you move through code with the arrows and Home and End, a TKL or 75% keeps them in reach while freeing desk space for the mouse.

Stated layouts in this table: Full size, 255; 96% to 98%, 79; TKL (80%), 48; 75%, 90; 65%, 26; 60%, 56. 267 keyboards do not state one.

Switches: type and feel

Keyboards here use mechanical switches, rubber membrane domes, or magnetic (Hall effect) switches that read each key with a magnet and a sensor instead of a metal contact. Among mechanical switches the feel comes in three kinds: linear (smooth all the way down), tactile (a bump where the key registers) and clicky (a bump and an audible click). A clicky switch is the one your microphone and the people near you will hear on a call.

Stated switch types in this table: Mechanical, 303; Magnetic (Hall effect), 73; Optical, 5; Capacitive (Topre), 4; Membrane, 105. By stated feel: 116 linear, 34 tactile and 28 clicky.

Hot-swappable switches

On a hot-swappable board the switches pull out of their sockets and new ones push in, with no soldering, so you can change the feel later or replace one that fails. 187 keyboards in this table state hot-swap sockets; a listing that does not say so is not counted.

Wrists and ergonomic boards

If you type for hours, start with posture. OSHA's computer workstations guide says to put the keyboard directly in front of you with your elbows close to the body at about keyboard height, and to keep your wrists straight and in line with your forearms. It adds that alternative keyboards (split and angled designs) can help keep the wrists neutral, but that research does not conclusively show they prevent discomfort or injury.

41 keyboards in this table are stated as ergonomic or split.

Keyboards for Mac

Any USB or Bluetooth keyboard types on a Mac, but the modifier keys are named and placed differently. Per Apple's Mac keyboard shortcuts page, on a keyboard made for Windows you press Alt where a Mac shortcut says Option, and Ctrl or the Windows logo key where it says Command. A board with a Mac layout prints the Mac names and puts Command next to the space bar, where Mac shortcuts expect it.

360 keyboards of the 821 in this table meet the Mac rule printed beside the filter, from $15.99 to $1,000.99 at the last price check. 461 keyboards do not state enough to judge and are never counted as meeting it.

Keyboards for office work

For office work the deciding points are quiet keys, a full set of keys for numbers and shortcuts, and a connection that does not get in the way. A wired board needs no charging or pairing; a wireless one clears the desk and can move between a laptop and a desktop.

322 keyboards of the 821 in this table meet the Office rule printed beside the filter, from $15.99 to $1,521.00 at the last price check. 260 keyboards do not state enough to judge and are never counted as meeting it.

By stated connection: 468 wireless keyboards and 226 wired keyboards. 127 keyboards do not state it.

Keyboards for gaming

Polling rate is how many times per second the keyboard reports to the computer: at 1,000 Hz it reports every millisecond, at 125 Hz every 8 milliseconds. Magnetic (Hall effect) switches matter to some players because the board reads how far each key is pressed rather than only whether it closed a contact.

124 keyboards of the 821 in this table meet the Gaming rule printed beside the filter, from $20.99 to $770.01 at the last price check. 697 keyboards do not state enough to judge and are never counted as meeting it.

101 keyboards in this table state a polling rate of 1,000 Hz or more, the highest 8,000 Hz. 720 keyboards do not state one. 73 keyboards state magnetic (Hall effect) switches.

Keyboards for travel

A keyboard that travels with a laptop should be small and wireless: a 75% or 65% layout keeps the arrows in a bag-sized body, and a board that pairs with more than one device switches between the laptop and a tablet without re-pairing.

93 keyboards of the 821 in this table meet the Travel rule printed beside the filter, from $28.49 to $599.99 at the last price check. 243 keyboards do not state enough to judge and are never counted as meeting it.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What keyboard layout is best for programming?

The smallest one that still has the keys you use without a layer key. If you move through code with the arrows, Home and End, a TKL or 75% board keeps them; a 60% board puts them behind a layer key. Stated layouts in this table: Full size, 255; 96% to 98%, 79; TKL (80%), 48; 75%, 90; 65%, 26; 60%, 56.

Is a mechanical keyboard better for coding?

It is a matter of feel, not speed of the code you write. Mechanical switches come linear, tactile or clicky; a clicky switch adds an audible click to every key. Membrane boards press a rubber dome instead of a switch. Stated switch types here: Mechanical, 303; Magnetic (Hall effect), 73; Optical, 5; Capacitive (Topre), 4; Membrane, 105.

Can I use a Windows keyboard on a Mac?

Yes. Apple says to press Alt instead of Option, and Ctrl or the Windows logo key instead of Command, on a keyboard made for Windows. Source: Apple's Mac keyboard shortcuts page

Are ergonomic or split keyboards better for your wrists?

They can help keep the wrists neutral, but OSHA notes that research does not conclusively show they prevent discomfort or injury. OSHA's first advice is placement and straight wrists. 41 keyboards in this table are stated as ergonomic or split. Source: OSHA's computer workstations guide

Wired or wireless keyboard for work?

Wired needs no battery or pairing; wireless clears the desk and can switch between machines. This table has 468 wireless keyboards and 226 wired keyboards by stated connection.

What does hot-swappable mean on a keyboard?

The switches pull out and new ones push in without soldering, so the feel can change later. 187 keyboards here state it.

How this page is built

Prices come from the stores Argusic tracks. An Amazon price counts when it was read in the last 24 hours, another store's price when it was read in the last 48 hours, because those feeds arrive once a day. Each price shows the store and the time it was read. Keyboards priced under $15 are not listed. 821 keyboards are listed now.

Specs are what each seller states on its listing; Argusic has not tested these keyboards hands-on. The Use for rules are Argusic's and printed beside the filter, and a keyboard whose listing does not state what a rule needs is never counted as meeting it.

The default order, Recommended, puts a middle price band first, then the bands on either side, then the rest; within each band popular models come first and brands take turns. The Top picks block shows one model per brand. The order is an editorial default, not a quality ranking, and commissions never change the order or any number.
